Building owners and businesses spend millions of dollars annually to deal with infestations and the problems associated with pest birds. The risks associated with these pests increase year after year as bird populations continue to grow in both inner city and urban environments. The fact is, these pests are out of their natural element and without proper bird control measures, they can wreak havoc on commercial buildings and the people around them.

Bird Control Products have Come a Long Way Since the Scarecrow!
The scarecrow has become somewhat of a cultural icon. We have seen scarecrows personified in popular movies like the wizard of oz, in comics, cartoons and more. The image is surely recognizable to most people.
Scarecrows were the first bird control product on record. The first mention was found in the “Kojiki”, the oldest surviving book in Japan in 712 AD. In the Kojiki, the scarecrow was described as a deity who, though without feet, was out in all weather and all seasons. It was designed to scare crows and other birds from disturbing food crops. Farmers most likely noticed that birds were scared away when people were tending the fields, and devised a simple way to deter them.
So what about today? Even though most people are familiar with the image of a scarecrow, most dealing with a pest bird problem are unaware of just how many bird control products are now available. Whether you have a bird problem on your home, business, or out in the field, bird deterrents have come a long way.
Bird control products have evolved by using today’s technologies to solve an age old problem, but many new products still use the same ideals that helped the scarecrow work. The scarecrow is categorized as a visual deterrent, when birds saw one in the field they thought they were looking at a human and would flee from the area.

Birds love to perch in covered areas, and once they’ve targeted your property as “home,” they’ll come back time and again to create quite a mess. It’s a problem that goes beyond appearance. The damage pest birds and bird droppings cause can cost you big money. The high concentration of uric acid found in bird waste can discolor paint, stain wood and eventually erode metal. There’s also the health risk of bacteria and parasites that live and grow in bird droppings. These can carry and transmit any of over 60 known diseases. All the more reason to birdproof your home or business. Taking steps to rid your property of birds is an investment that will save you time, money and lot of aggravation.
For years the Chicago Cubs have had to share their ballpark with unwanted guests; pest birds. It seemed Wrigley Field was an ideal spot for birds, providing generous shelter, and an abundant food source.
Birds such as pigeons, seagulls, and starlings had been around the park for awhile, but it was complaints from the fans that prompted a real solution.
Gary Hubbard has worked in Maintenance Operations at Wrigley for the last four years. Gary’s seen all sorts of devices implemented to shoo the winged pests away. “We’ve used a sticky gel, Owls, Sound Devices, and nothing seemed to work” said Hubbard of past attempts.
Hubbard explained that during games “pigeons and starlings would sit in the rafters above the upper deck and descend upon the bleaches to feed once to fans left”. Some of the fans sitting in the upper deck were being bombarded with bird droppings.
After continuous complaints poured in, the maintenance department sought a solution that would take care of the problem once and for all.
That’s when they called Bird-B-Gone, a company in California who specializes in Bird Control. The sales team at Bird-B-Gone recommended Bird Net 2000, a heavy duty polyethylene net that would prevent birds from entering the rafter area altogether.
