What are pest birds?

Though there isn’t a universal definition explaining what a pest bird is, three species are commonly labeled as pest birds in the United States, the Feral Pigeon, the English Starling, and the House Sparrow, all of which are invasive, non-native species. Other species such as Grackles, Canadian Geese, Swallows, Cormorants, Seagulls and Crows have been hailed as common pest birds. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife department, “Any bird, a cardinal, chickadee or dove, can become a "problem" when it does something unpleasant. What's unpleasant depends on what the bird is doing, and how you react.”

Are pest birds protected?

There are currently over 800 species of birds protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The Treaty basically prohibits people from pursuing, hunting, taking, capturing, killing or selling protected birds. The statute does not discriminate between live or dead birds and also grants full protection to any bird parts including feathers, eggs and nests.
That being said, it is perfectly legal to use bird deterrents to protect your property from pest birds, as long as you are not harming the bird, or disturbing an active nest.

Do birds carry disease?

Yes, birds do carry over 60 diseases transmittable to humans. Bird roosts and nests can also host ectoparasites, like bird mites.
People are most at risk when they are constantly being exposed to bird droppings. The CDC notes that some are more susceptible to contracting diseases than others “Some people are more likely than others to get diseases from birds. A person's age and health status may affect his or her immune system, increasing the chances of getting sick. People who are more likely to get diseases from birds include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS, and people being treated for cancer.”
It is very important that you keep yourself and any employees properly protected when cleaning up bird droppings. To get tips on clean up, contact our sales team at 1-800-392-6915.

Canadian Geese

Geese will respond to audio, visual, and taste aversion products. Many wildlife specialists suggest that using an integrated approach works best, that is using a combination of products to rid them from your property. Typically Canada Geese enter properties to graze on the grass. We carry four different products to keep Geese away. The Migrate Goose Repellent is a topical grass treatment you can spray on the lawn to make your grass inedible. We have an outdoor sound deterrent called the Goose Chase Sonic that can cover between 1-5 acres, deterring geese by playing predator and distress calls. There are visual deterrents that can be strategically placed around the property like the Flash Tape, and Bird-B-Gone Balloon. Lastly there is a motion activated sprinkler that sprays out a stream of water every time motion is sensed.

Woodpeckers

Woodpeckers “peck” to find food, store food, build nesting cavities, establish territory, and to attract mates. Any of our visual deterrents work well for a woodpecker problem. These products include the Scare Eye Diverters, Bird-B-Gone Balloon, and the Flash Tape. The outdoor sound deterrent, the Bird Chase Sonic, can also be used to deter woodpeckers.

How to keep birds out of trees?

Trees are a bird’s natural habitat, which makes discouraging them from roosting or perching in trees difficult. There are just so many perches and opportunities for them to land, and foliage to hide within. There are a few products that people have had success with in the past. For fruit and small trees, try hanging the visual deterrents around the tree, almost like Christmas ornaments. The visual products have shiny reflective surfaces that will have the bird wanting to avoid the area.  For smaller trees or bushes, we carry a lightweight plastic mesh that can be used to protect your plants.

Birds on Boats or Marinas

The masts and spreaders of boats provide perfect perch for pest birds, not to mention canvas covers, radars, and railing. Marinas offer countless boats, docks, and opportunities for birds to land. We have a few great products to help boat owner’s deal with pest birds. The Bird Spider is a simple product that uses motion to keep birds away. The steel arms of the Bird Spider bounce and sway in the wind, frightening away birds from the boat. There are a few different mounting options designed specifically for use on boats to choose from. The Repeller, a solar powered bird deterrent, can also be used on boats. This unit is ideal for flat surfaces such as canopies or covers, swim platforms, or docks. The continuous sweeping motion of the rods will keep the birds away from the area. Other boat owners have also had success using any of the visual deterrents like the Mylar flash tape, Bird-B-Gone Balloon, or Scare Eye Diverters.

Pigeons on a roof

Birds like to perch on the high point of structures, as it provides them with the best vantage point to look for predators and food. By treating the peak of the roof, and ledges, you eliminate their lookout point, and often send them to a better location. Bird spikes work well for roof tops. They can be glued or nailed into any surface, and are very easy to install. The outdoor sound deterrent, the Bird Chase Sonic, also works well for rooftops, as it is weatherproof and can cover large open spaces. If birds are nesting on the roof, you will want to make sure and remove all nests, and clean the area before installing any products. If you are unable to access your roof, Bird-B-Gone Authorized Installers can come out and install spikes.

Birds nesting under eaves or a canopy

An eave is the perfect home for a bird. It provides shelter from the elements and predators. Scents in the nesting material and droppings will lead the bird back to their own nest. The most important step in getting rid of the birds will be to make sure all of the nesting materials and droppings are cleaned away, and the area disinfected. Calling a bird control professional to help aid with the clean up and installation is your best bet. Bird droppings carry disease, and the proper protection is a must. Once the nests and droppings are cleaned up, there are several products that can help. The best way to keep birds out of an eave is to block them out with netting. Netting acts as a physical barrier, blocking the birds from getting into the eave areas. The bird slope and spikes can also be used to prevent birds from nesting.

Birds sitting on a window sill

Window sills provide a perch, and often shelter for birds. Products such as the Bird Spikes or Bird Gel work well in this situation. Bird spikes can be glued down, and are effective for large pest birds. The Bird Gel lasts 6 months outdoors, and is effective for all birds. If you have birds flying into a window, or pecking at a window, we carry “window alerts”. These are decals applied to the window itself, which help birds recognize the surface, and ignore the reflection.

Geese, Ducks or birds in or around a pool

If you are having problems with birds around your pool you may want to consider the outdoor sound deterrent. This is a weatherproof unit that uses predator and distress calls to scare birds from the area. We also have a product called the Scarecrow, which is ideal when birds are sitting around or in a pool. The scarecrow is a motion activated sprinkler that sprays out water every time motion is sensed. To keep birds like geese and ducks out of a pool, the Bird-B-Gone Balloon works well. You simply float a few balloons on the surface of the water, by filling them ¾ with air, ¼ with water. When birds see the iridescent surface, and predator eyes, they will want to avoid the area.

Birds nesting in a garage or barn

Blocking access to the rafters or beams that the birds perch on, by installing netting, is the absolute best way to protect these areas.  You would want to do a good cleanup of the nesting materials and droppings first. Make sure to wear the proper protection and wash thoroughly after coming in contact with droppings. If you are living with a compromised immune system, it is recommended that you do not do the cleanup. Once the area is cleaned away, you will want to install netting right below the beams. The netting should be secured around all of the edges to prevent persistent birds from squeezing in. We also carry a sound deterrent that can be used indoors or outdoors. It plays a combination of bird predator calls, and distress calls. These sounds will not harm animals, and is safe to use where livestock is being housed. You could also treat each ledge where the birds are nesting with physical deterrents like the bird slope or spike.

Birds making a mess of a dock or swim platform

Geese, ducks, gulls and other birds are notorious for using docks, and swim platforms as waterfront perches. The Bird Spider and Solar Bird Repeller work well for both swim platforms and docks, by using movement to deter birds from the area. Bird Spiders and spikes can be used to prevent birds from sitting on pilings. For docks: many people string the flash tape along the length of the dock, the birds will be frightened or confused by the shiny reflective surface and will want to avoid the area. Some people even use the Scarecrow motion activated sprinkler to keep birds off docks. The scarecrow sprays out a stream of water 25’x35’ every time motion is sensed.

Turkey Vultures!

There are a few products that we have to help with a turkey vulture problem. Visual deterrents like the Mylar flash tape, scare eye diverters, and Bird-B-Gone Balloon, can be hung around your property to try and discourage the birds. When they see the shiny, reflective surfaces, its almost like looking at an optical illusion, usually they will want to avoid the area. The scarecrow motion activated sprinkler can also be used to help keep turkey vultures away from your property. If they are landing on your roof, spikes can be installed to take away any high perches. There is a turkey vulture society who lists suggestions on deter these birds:
